Coastal resilience in Saint Lucia

ShoreSight: Coastal hazard mapping tool for climate adaptation in Saint Lucia

ShoreSight is a web based tool developed to support informed coastal planning and climate adaptation in Saint Lucia. It brings together present day and future maps of coastal flooding, sea level rise, and coastal erosion, alongside relevant background mapping, in an interactive map viewer.

Saint Lucia’s coastal zone is vital to the national economy and home to important ecosystems. It is already exposed to hazards such as storm driven coastal flooding and erosion, and future sea level rise and potentially more intense storms are expected to significantly increase these risks. Access to clear, spatial information is therefore essential to support effective planning, risk management, and adaptation to a changing climate.

The tool is intended to support both short and long term decision making, including spatial planning and development control, emergency preparedness, community engagement, and public awareness. ShoreSight has been designed to remain clear and usable for non specialist audiences, while also meeting the needs of technical and policy users.

ShoreSight was developed as part of the “Modelling and Assessment of Coastal Climate Change Impacts in Saint Lucia” component under the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Green Climate Fund (GCF) Readiness Project (2023-2026). The project supports Saint Lucia’s national adaptation planning process and was executed by the Government of Saint Lucia’s Department of Sustainable Development, with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) as Delivery Partner and HR Wallingford as lead consultant.

The ShoreSight tool can be accessed via the button below. A downloadable project summary report is also available, setting out the key findings, methods, and outputs from the project as a whole, at https://www.finance.gov.lc/programmes/view/218

For further information on the tool, the wider project and all matters related to the Government's spatial data management, please contact The National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Unit in St. Lucia, within the Ministry of Finance, Justice, National Security, Constituency Development and People Empowerment.
